Birmingham, Alabama, is known as "The Magic City" for its reputation for growth and reinvention. Though the gay community here long has dealt with the horrors of discrimination, the tide is beginning to turn. Birmingham's growing LGBT community supports a Pride celebration, a gay and lesbian film festival and a handful of gay-owned businesses. Birmingham has elected several openly gay officials to public office. The Birmingham gay scene is diverse and welcoming, and includes students from the local University. The gay clubs tend to come and go here, but there's always a couple of great places to hang out and find like-minded folk.
